Deck chronometer in mahogany box

An extremely fine and large eight day marine deck chronometer made by Kelvin, White & Hutton in London, England, circa 1920. This chronometer comes in a three part mahogany box with an original, signed and numbered ivory plaque, in which the glazed open faced watch is gimbal suspended. The silvered dial has Roman hour numerals, an outer minute track, a subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock, a power reserve indicator at 12 and blued steel spade hands. The highly refined eight day movement has a detent chronometer escapement with helical hairspring and an auxiliary, extremely large chronometer compensation balance.
Dial and box have matching numbers and are signed.

Kelvin, White & Hutton were listed as working at 11 Billiter Street, London from 1904 to 1937. The firm was founded by William Thompson who later became Lord Kelvin. At age 21 he was offered the Professorship of Natural Philosophy at Glasgow University, a post he held for 53 years.
