Gold open faced pocket watch

A very fine English 18 carat gold and enamel duplex pocket watch made for the Chinese market, circa 1830. Lavishly florally engraved gilt bridge movement, key wound, going barrel, duplex escapement, five-arm steel balance, pierced balance cock, chatoned diamond endstone on balance. White enamel dial with Roman hours, outer minute track, centre seconds and gold spade hands. The case back with cloisonné enamel depicting a fine composition of summer flowers in a vase against a light green ground, the bezel engine-turned on both sides with translucent cobalt blue enamel and half pearl-set, engraved band with opaque light blue enamel, champlevé enamel pendant and bow, case maker’s punch mark RD.

Cloisonné is an ancient technique for decorating metalwork objects with coloured material held in place or separated by metal strips or wire, normally of gold. In recent centuries, vitreous enamel has been used, but inlays of cut gemstones, glass and other materials were also used during older periods, indeed, cloisonné enamel very probably began as an easier imitation of cloisonné work using gems. The resulting objects can also be called cloisonné.
