An English, very heavy, minute repeating hunting cased gold watch with winding patent Nicole Nielsen and hallmarks 1874.
18 carat gold case with a monogram, hallmarks 1874 and case maker’s punch A.N (Adolph Nicole Master Mark). Matching numbers 7835 on case and movement. Very fine English lever movement, repeating hours, quarters and minutes; rare winding, patent Nicole Nielsen, main plate signed and numbered. Signed enamel dial, excellent condition, unusual position of seconds register between 10 and 12 o’clock, peripheral inscription “Prize Medals International Exhibitions London 1862 Paris 1867”, Roman hours, Arabic seconds, blued steel hands.

Joseph Sewill was a maker to the Admiralty and the Royal Navy. He was awarded a Prize Medal at the 1862 International Exhibition. He invented and patented his own auxiliary compensation balance. In 1874 he won the Greenwich Observatory Chronometer Contest. Most of his chronometers are two day chronometers. He used ebauches by Kullberg, Mercer, Poole, Murray. The present one is by Mercer.
