Gold repoussé verge watch by Grantham
–
A gold English pair cased verge watch with high relief repoussé scene made for the Dutch market in a gilt metal and shagreen outer protective case, circa 1765. This timepiece features a gilded full plate movement with verge escapement, a plain flat balance, a decoratively pierced and floral engraved balance cock, square baluster pillars, and a fusee and chain. It is signed and numbered Grantham of London with a serial number. The white enamel dial is adorned with Roman numerals, an outer arcaded minute ring with Arabic numerals, and marcasite-set hands.
–
The pocket watch features a simple gold inner case with a winding aperture at the back, a stirrup pendant and bow, and a decorative boss on the top. It is hallmarked London 1765 and bears the maker’s mark JF beneath a star incuse. The repoussé outer case is intricately decorated with a high relief scene depicting Joseph being sold into slavery, surrounded by chased and engraved shell and scroll work. Additionally, the bezel is adorned with floral sprays. The outer protective case is made of gilt metal and glazed, with shagreen bezels and secured with gilt metal pin work.

The watch has scratches and a very small hairline near the catch. The inner case has a slight depression on the band, while the outer repoussé case still retains good definition with some light rubbing. The outer protective case has some splits and cracks on the shagreen, wear to gilding, and a couple of missing pins from the shagreen. The movement is running.
