Gold open faced pocket watch by Charles Frodsham

A very fine, heavy English gentleman’s pocket watch with minute repeating, spring detent escapement and 30h power reserve indicator, in best movement design “AD.Fmsz”, circa 1912.
18 carat gold, tiered, polished case with gold dome and case maker’s punch mark “G&Co Ld” (Gibson & Co Ltd). Signed, numbered, off-white enamel dial with radial Roman hours, auxiliary seconds, 30h power reserve indicator and blued spade hands. 4/5 plate movement, ébauche: Louis Audemars, supplied by Audemars on 16th April 1883 at a cost of £ 57, frosted, gilt, with screwed chatons, chain/fusee, 2 hammers / 2 gongs, English lever escapement, freesprung balance spring, spring detent escapement and set diamond endstone on balance.

Charles Frodsham (1810-1871)
Frodsham was a maker of very fine watches, originally of the Strand, London, and then New Bond Street. His best quality watches bear the letters AD.Fmsz, which is interpreted as 1850, the year he bought J.R. Arnold’s estate after his death; the firm was known for a short period as Arnold and Frodsham. He conducted many experiments with compensated balances and the balance spring to discover their underlying principles; he also wrote several papers on technical subjects.
