A heavy English 18K gold open faced duplex pocket watch, circa 1811.
Engine-turned à goutte case with an engraved escutcheon on the back, case maker’s punch mark FC FHB, a movement protection cap. White enamel dial with radial Roman hours and Arabic five-minutes, blued pierced heart-shaped hour hand and a blued Breguet minute hand. Signed, gilt full plate movement with applied floral engraved and pierced appliques, chain and fusee, moulded pillars, duplex escapement, plain three-arm steel balance, temperature-compensating balance spring, rich florally engraved balance cock with a mascaron, silver regulator disc and chatoned diamond endstone on balance.

Renowned in London as an excellent watchmaker, the Swiss-born Justin Vulliamy went into partnership with Benjamin Gray, watchmaker for King George II, in 1730. After Gray’s death in 1775, Vulliamy continued the business by himself.
