Gold open faced pocket watch

A rare English gold open faced free sprung chronometer pocket watch, circa 1795. Gilt full plate movement signed Margetts London with raised balance cock, blued steel helical balance spring, large keystone weights and gold timing screws, Earnshaw spring detent escapement, cylindrical pillars, plain dust cap stamped Furneaux on the inside.
Gilt dial with Roman chapter ring and engine turned centre, subsidiary seconds, gold hands, large 18 carat gold case with possibly later case back but punch numbered, corresponding with the movement number.

George Margetts
London (Cheapside) Freeman of Clockmakers Company 1779, Liveryman of the Clockmakers Company 1799 – 1808. A famous maker of the late 18th Century in the circle of English horologists experimenting with precision timekeeping, such as: Mudge, Emery, Arnold, Earnshaw, Kendal, Brockbank, Barraud, Pennington and Haley. Examples of his work can be found in the British Museum, Guildhall Museum and the Dennison Collection.
