–
An English heavy gold hunting cased lever watch with power reserve indication, circa 1873. It features a frosted gilded 2/3 plate movement with lever escapement, fusee and chain, blued steel screws, and screwed chatons with diamond jewelling, signed Thomas Bryan, 98 Gt. Homer St., Liverpool. The white enamel dial displays Roman numerals, an outer track for minutes/seconds, a sunken centre, a subsidiary dial for 30 hour up and down indication, gold spade hands, and a blued steel centre seconds. The 18 carat gold case boasts polished covers, the front of which has a vacant cartouche, a stop slide to the band at 4 o’clock, a plain gold ring pendant, and a polished gold cuvette featuring apertures for winding and handsetting, surrounded by decorative floral engraving. The case covers and cuvette are hallmarked Chester 1873 and bear the maker’s mark J GR. Both the cuvette and covers are numbered.

The movement is functioning well. There is some tarnishing and a few spots of oxidation on the plates. The up and down indicator is operating correctly. The hands are set smoothly. The dial is in good overall condition, with a few minor scratches. The case has been repolished. The bow is slightly thinned towards the peak, showing some pitting and possibly a small repair.
