Open faced pocket watch by Royal watchmaker John Ellicott
–
A technical and very interesting, early English pocket watch with center seconds, circa 1770.
Replaced solid silver case with London hallmarks (made in 1894 for the extremely fine and technically interesting Ellicott movement no. 6240), original signed and numbered dome and lateral lever to stop the central seconds. Excellent quality, decorated movement with big diamond endstone, cylinder escapement and signed and numbered. White enamel dial with Roman hours, Arabic minutes, rare center seconds, steel seconds hand, pink gold hand for minutes and seconds in shape of a heart.

John Ellicott (1706-1772) was one of the most important English watchmakers and inventors. He was watchmaker of the King and “Fellow of Royal Society”. As is the case with other major English watchmakers such as Tompion or Graham, it often happened that these valuable movements were given a new case in the 19th century, when the original, mostly golden case was broken or missing.

Signed: Ellicott London
