–
A fine and very rare English gold open faced keyless lever watch with barometer and thermometer, circa 1890. This watch has a damascened nickel movement with a lever escapement, jewelled to the centre, a bimetallic compensation balance, wolf’s tooth winding, a barometric work set to the movement edge and connected to the indication hand via a rack and lever, and an underdial featuring bimetallic thermometer work. The white enamel dial, signed Le Roy & Son London, has Roman numerals, a sector beneath 12 o’clock for temperature with graduated scales for Réaumur, Centigrade, and Fahrenheit. The inner revolving bezel is calibrated with a barometric scale, a central barometric hand, and sunken subsidiary seconds with blued steel spade hands. The gold case features polished covers, milled borders, a glazed cuvette, and a case back numbered 15422.

Movement running, some slight tarnishing to the plates. The thermometer is not displaying the correct temperature at present and will need adjusting. The barometer was not tested. The dial appears to be in good condition, with a couple of minor scratches. Case with signs of past polishing.

Le Roy et Fils was a French company making clocks and watches. The company was founded in 1785 by Basile Charles Le Roy (1765–1839), who later passed it on to his son, Charles-Louis Le Roy.
Le Roy et Fils became successful and survived the turmoils of the French Revolution. It became a clockmaker to Napoleon I, his sister Princess Pauline, Mme Mere, and the King of Westphalia. After the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy, it was a warrant holder for the Duke of Bourbon.
A shop was opened in London in 1854 at 296 Regent Street under the name of Le Roy and Son. The name was later changed to Le Roy and Fils. A second shop was opened in London in 1885 at 57 New Bond Street. Le Roy and Fils was a British Royal Warrant holder to Queen Victoria and was the only foreign clockmaker that held a British royal warrant.
