Brass gilt pair cased pocket watch by Jason Staplin
–
A representative pair cased English two train pocket coach clock watch with stoppable centre seconds, quarter hour self strike, and open faced, circa 1780. Made for the Chinese market. One horological complication: Striking the hours and the quarters in passing on one bell (function activated by the push bolt at 3 o’clock).
The key winding, round shaped case is gilded brass with paste gem set, pearl set and enamel; the case back is engraved in taille douce (fine cut) with geometric patterns and royal blue flinqué enamel panel; the bezels are set with alternating red paste stones and half pearls. The dial is enamel with Roman radial hours, outer minutes/seconds track with Arabic five minutes/seconds numerals, and gold Poker & Beetle hands. And the movement is a full plate, gilded brass movement, engraved with scrolls, fusee and chain, cylinder escapement, monometallic balance (polished steel) and blued steel flat hairspring, pierced and engraved gilded English cock, and diamond end stone; standing barrel for quarter striking; stop balance (push bolt at 8 o’clock).
