Silver wandering hour verge watch by John Bushman
–
An English silver pair cased wandering hour verge watch with the portrait of Queen Anne, and to celebrate the act of union in 1707, circa 1710. This watch features a gilded full plate movement with a fusee and chain, signed John Bushman of London and numbered 1380. It includes a mock pendulum engraved with Le Main Tien Dray, phonetically similar to the Dutch motto Je Maintiendrai. The dial is silver champlevé, featuring a wandering hour aperture engraved with quarter hour markers, adorned with foliate decorations, and engraved armorials beneath a painted portrait bust of a young Queen Anne. The inner case is silver with the case maker’s mark IW for John Willoughby, while the outer case is silver repoussé, decorated with cherubs.

The outer casing shows some rubbing but has no pinholes, reflecting a continental style. The inner casing is tarnished but undented. The dial is tarnished in areas with some dirt around the portrait bust. Overall, it is in good condition, and the movement is running smoothly.

John Bushman (also Buschman or Buschmann) was born in 1661 in Augsburg, Germany as the son of the renowned clockmaker Johann Bushmann II. In circa 1687 he moved to London where in 1690, he got married as Johannes Bushman to 23-year-old Mary Wyatt at Christ Church. In 1692 he became a Free Brother of the Clockmakers’ Company and was made an assistant in 1720. Bushman presumably worked until 1725.
