Gold, enamel and diamond-set watch by Harry Emanuel
–
A rare English gold, enamel, turquoise and diamond-set open faced watch with a monochromatic painted dial depicting satan and a satanic emblem, circa 1850. This watch features a gilded ¾ plate movement with lever escapement and a bimetallic compensation balance. It is signed by Harry Emanuel of Hanover Square, London, with the serial number 5001. The white enamel dial showcases a monochrome painting of Satan in a top hat at the centre, with hour markers depicting demons. The blued steel hands are designed in the shape of a devil’s tail and trident. The gold case has a back centred with a diamond-set W H monogram with black enamel and decorative scrolls, set with triangular-shaped turquoise. The maker’s mark is AS for Alfred Stram.

The dial features several satanic motifs, with the numerals replaced by figures commonly associated with death and the Devil. It includes symbols of a vulture, bat, cauldron, monkey, satyr, and witch, as well as depictions of satanic rituals. These pieces surround a central figure wearing a top hat with a devil’s tail and pitchfork, which function as the hands to tell time.

Overall, the watch is in good condition with no visible chips or scratches on the dial. However, the black enamel on the back cover is scratched, and most of the white enamel on the scrolling has worn off. Additionally, four diamonds are missing from the monogram. The movement is not running, but it appears to be complete.
