Ray skin, silver repeating coach clock by Francis Berthoud
–
A rare, astronomical English pair-cased quarter repeating coach clock with alarm, circa 1780.
Two cases: wood/silver/ray skin outer case with sound holes and large lateral hinge; and brass gilt inner case with repoussé case depicting a Galant scene, pierced, rear bell, and movement protection cap. Enamel dial with Roman hours, fifteen-minute Arabic outer track, 24-hour indication for alarm, and steel hands. Full plate movement, chain/fusee, three barrels, four hammers, three-arm steel balance, and verge escapement.
–
The back of this remarkable carriage clock shows a Galant scene on a pond with a church and farm buildings executed in bas-relief. The case band is decorated with engraved tendrils, ribbons and stylized flower heads. The enamel dial has Roman hour numerals, an inner indication for the moon age where the hand is decorated with a crescent moon. It is highly unusual to see a ray-skin-covered outer case in such perfect condition as this one.
