Silver pocket watch with open face by Stephen Gibbs

An English, silver pair-cased key-winding pocket watch, circa 1770.
Brass and steel full plate movement with fusee and chain and early cylinder escapement, engraved balance cock, silver index regulator. Enamel dial with Roman radial hours, outer minutes track with Arabic five minutes numerals and Fleur-de-Lys hands. Round-shaped silver polished case.
The watch has two signatures: one on the backplate, which reads Stepn Gibbs London 735, and another on the dust cover, which reads Stepn Gibbs/London/No 735.

The markings on the interior of the inner and outer cases indicate the place, date, quality and maker of the case. The place is London, as shown by the leopard’s head symbol. The date is 1770, as shown by the letter p. The quality is sterling, as shown by the lion passant symbol. The maker is possibly John Higginbotham, as shown by the initials I H in a rectangular shape. The engraving on the inner case is AD 1770, which may be the owner’s initials and the year of purchase.

This watch is made by Stephen Gibbs, a British watchmaker who was active in the mid-18th century. He was admitted to the Clockmakers’ Company in 1748 and worked until 1764. The case of the watch may have been made by John Higginbotham, another member of the Clockmakers’ Company.
