Silver carriage watch by Ralph Gout
–
A rare English pair-cased silver Oignon carriage clock watch, circa 1790.
This clock watch has two cases: a plain silver inner case and a beautifully engraved outer case adorned with decorative details. The watch boasts an enamel dial with Roman radial hours, outer minutes track with Arabic five minutes numerals, and a steel single beetle poker hand. The gilt full plate movement is adorned with intricate decorations and features a verge escapement. This masterpiece was crafted by the skilled watchmaker Ralph Gout (ca. 1770–1836, bankrupt 1796) and is signed on the works as R. GOUT / LONDON, 2201; while the dial bears the signature GOUT / LONDON.

Ralph Gout, English watchmaker
Ralph Gout originally came from Switzerland. He was an important watchmaker in London around 1770. From 1770 to 1800, he resided at 6 Norman Street, Old Street, London. In 1796 he went bankrupt but was able to resume operations. On November 4, 1799, Ralph Gout received patent number 2351 for various forms of pedometers.
From 1802 to 1829, he worked at 122 Bunhill Row, St. Luke’s, and at Burchin Lane around 1815. Perhaps he was the father of David Gout.
