Small verge watch with quarter repeater
–
A rare small verge watch with repeater, made by Elizier & James Chater in London, England, circa 1750. This watch features a double case made of silver, an outer case covered with tortoiseshell, an open worked inner case, a bell and a dust cover. The very well preserved enamel dial features an outer minute track with Arabic hour numerals. The entirely separate hands are made of finely crafted, gilded brass; the short openwork filigree hour hand boasts a heavy, ornate ‘beetle’ silhouette, while the intricate minute hand features a pierced baroque scroll design terminating in a thin, elongated pointer tip. The numbered English fusee movement is equipped with a verge escapement, a quarter repeater, a pierced balance cock, a silver regulator disc, a fire gilt full brass plate, turned pillars and a diamond end stone.
The movement is signed.
