Gold and painted enamel verge watch by John Wilter
–
A very fine English double-cased verge pocket watch with date, in repoussé outer case, from the late 18th century.
The watch boasts a fine full plate movement, with applied engraved ornaments and a chain/fusee. The movement pillars are baluster-shaped, which adds to the watch’s elegance. The enamel dial is equally impressive, with Roman radial hours, an arcaded minute ring with Arabic five minutes numerals, and gilt hands. The date window at 6 adds to the watch’s functionality. The watch has two cases. The outer repoussé case is made of 18-carat gold and features a painted-on enamel picture of two women. The inner case is also made of 18-carat gold and is polished to perfection.

John Wilter worked as a watchmaker in London between 1730 and 1740. Other sources mention it between 1760 and 1784. There are watches signed with John Wilter or Wilter which have been called “pseudo-London” watches. These are probably made in Geneva. E.g. a pocket watch from John Wilter London N °. 5719 The British Museum.
