Fine, early French gold verge pocket watch with polychrome enamel paintings, circa 1645-1650.
This watch features a gilt brass full plate movement with going train, fusee regulation, verge escapement with a balance, rachet-and-click set-up for the mainspring, steel ratchet wheel, and pierced cock. The dial has a white enamel disk with Roman numerals for the hours, half-hour marks, and a steel hand. The centre of the dial is decorated with blue enamel. The gold cases are embellished with polychrome enamel paintings depicting scenes from the biblical story of Joseph and Potiphar’s wife. The movement is falsely signed as M. Girar à Bloy.

Genesis (39:7–20) tells how Joseph, sold into slavery by his jealous brothers, was bought by Potiphar, captain of Pharaoh’s guard. Potiphar’s wife (not named in the Bible) took a liking to the young man and made several failed attempts to seduce him.
