Gold watch with polychrome enamel scene
–
A fine French 18 carat yellow gold, open faced, quarter repeating pocket watch made by Jean Romilly in Paris during the second half of the 18th century. This watch features a hand wound mechanical movement with a yoke escapement and a fusee and chain system (chain currently missing). The push button pendant activates the quarter striking system. The circular white enamel dial is marked ROMILLY à Paris. It displays Roman numeral hour markers, an outer minute track with Roman numerals at five minute intervals, Louis XV styles hands, and a winding square located at 2 o’clock. The gold case is elaborately decorated with engraved and enamelled foliage on the band, while the back features a high quality polychrome enamel scene depicting the goddess Nike with lovers. The watch is accompanied by an original gilded red leather case with a crown and Y.M monogram, and an 18 carat yellow gold winding key.
