An exceptionally fine and rare French, 18 Carat yellow gold quarter repeating, a double-train hunting cased pocket watch, circa 1850. Cadran Mnemonique by Charles Oudin, Horloger de la Marine, Palais Royal 52, Paris, executed by P. Sandoz & fils, Locle.

Independent dead centre seconds and Charles Oudin’s patented Mnemonique dial on the cuvette for remembering a single event or rendezvous. An engine-turned cover with a coat of arms, engine-turned back with elaborate initials MS, gold hinged cuvette, with enamel Arabic chapter, rings for the hour and the date. White enamel dial, radial Roman numerals, outer minute divisions with five minute/seconds. Gold steel spade hands.

A frosted gilt movement, two barrels, 40 jewels, lateral lever escapement with counterpoise, cut bimetallic compensation balance with Breguet balance spring, repeating on gongs through activating slide in the band, start/stop pusher in the band at 8.30 for the independent seconds. Cuvette signed in blue enamel for Charles Oudin. Movement signed under the dial for P. Sandoz & fils.
