–
A French 18 carat yellow gold open faced key wind pocket watch, of French workmanship, dating between 1838 and 1919. This watch features a key wind mechanical movement with lever escapement, wound through the cuvette, a characteristic feature of French watchmaking of the 19th century. The white enamel dial displays Roman numerals for the hours, an outer chemin de fer (railway) minute track with red Arabic numerals at five minute intervals, and pear shaped hands in steel. The round 18 carat yellow gold case features a smooth polished bezel and a guilloché decorated case back. The watch is fitted with a yellow gold cuvette in 18 carat gold. The case bears the French horsehead hallmark, confirming use in the French Departments and dating the piece to between 1838 and 1919.
