Gold double enamel dialled centre seconds watch by Tavernier
–
A French gold double enamel dialled dumb quarter repeating astronomical watch with a centre seconds hand, calendar, moon phases, and indications for the equation of time, circa 1780. This watch features a gilded full plate movement with cylinder escapement, fusee and chain, polished steel hammers repeating à toc and is signed and numbered twice on the movement rim, Tavernier no. 1004 and Tavernier à Paris no. 1004. It is double dialled with a white enamel first dial with Roman numerals, Arabic minute ring, center seconds, outermost ring with month length and indication for equation of time beneath, signed Tavernier à Paris and a second white enamel dial with days of the week to the center, apertures for moon phases, year, month with indication for its duration, date, subsidiary dial for division of the day into four parts, and regulator arc at 6 o’clock.

The case is made of gold, with decoratively chased and engraved bezels heightened with flowers in blue and green enamel with opaque white stringing, and a gold plunge pendant with a French control mark.

The movement is not functioning properly, and the repeating mechanism strikes incorrectly. The first dial has chips around the winding hole and at 5 o’clock, while the second dial shows visible damage around the edge and chips next to the hands. The year, month, and date indications have tarnished, making them difficult to read. Additionally, the case has scuff marks and slight chips to the enamel decorations. A French control mark is also present on the stem.

In his book, “Dictionnaire des Horlogers Français,” Tardy notes that Jean-Pierre Tavernier became a Master in 1746 and was recorded at the Rue de Bucy, Paris, in 1748. Tavernier passed away at the age of 81 in 1796. Tavernier’s son Louis (1754–1840) is known to have produced similar double dial watches to his father. Louis became a Master in 1788 and was appointed as Horloger to the Duc d’Orléans in 1790. A similar double dial watch by Tavernier numbered 1111, can be found at the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva.
