Exquisite open faced pocket watch by Jean-Joseph Lieutaud

An exquisite French gold enamel verge pocket watch with corresponding four part 22 Carat gold enamel chatelaine with original key, circa 1779.
This marvellous ensemble in excellent condition is decorated with a lavish engine-turned pattern with translucent blue enamelling and a border of opaque white enamel pearls. The watch shows a central diamond rose ornament and has diamonds on the pendant and on the pushers that open the case.
The case is made of 22-carat gold with the case maker’s punch mark LFL. The signed white enamel has radial Roman numerals, outer minutes track with Arabic five minutes numerals, and Louis XVI hands. And the movement is a signed, key wind, full plate movement with chain/fusee, verge escapement, and a three-arm brass balance.

A perfectly preserved guild mark proves that the watch case was made in 1779; the charge mark is Jean-Baptiste Fouache (1775-1781). Jean Joseph Lieutaud was based at the “Cour Abbatiale de Saint-Germain-des-Prés” in Paris. He became a master in 1764 and worked until 1789. On July 9, 1767 Lietaud rented a house in the Rue de Bussy from Jérôme de Beyne for 1300 Livres.

Jean Joseph Lieutaud lived in Paris from 1766 to 1767 in the “cour abbatiale de Saint-Germain-des-Prés” (monastery). In 1764, he was appointed master craftsman on September 3, 1767 and worked as such until 1789. (g. en. rep. clock Petit Palais, Paris) On July 9, 1767, he rented a house in Rue de Bussy from Jérôme de Beyne for 1,300 livres. He was mentioned with Louis Charlon on July 4, 1769 when Guillaume Groult married Marie Françoise Baurienne. Jean Joseph Lieutaud died on March 22, 1791 in Rue Guénégaud, parish of Saint André des Arts.
