An important French large 18K gold, enamel, pearl and stone-set verge pocket watch with a fine painting, circa 1780.
18K gold case, back with enamelled floral decoration, set with red stones, miniature pearls, and a very fine polychrome enamel painting in the centre. Signed white enamel dial with Roman radial hours, outer minutes track with Arabic five-minute numerals and, probably, original gold hands. Signed verge movement, No 280.

Charles Le Roy founded the oldest watch workshop in Paris, France, in 1764. Valued by the royal couple and the entire court, Le Roy was a welcome guest at the Louvre. He was known for the perfection of his clocks, found in large numbers in courtly palaces and mansions all over Europe.
