Gold jump hour cylinder watch by Breguet
–
A French gold open faced jump hour cylinder watch with eccentric dial, circa 1830. The watch features a gilded movement with a cylinder escapement, a three arm gold balance, a blue steel regulation index, and a standing barrel. It has a silver engine turned dial with an aperture for the hours, an offset ring for the minutes with a blued steel hand, and subsidiary seconds. The gold case has an engine turned back, a bezel and band, a plain ring pendant, and a polished gold cuvette with apertures for winding and hand setting, signed Giteau élève de Breguet, Palais Royal 140 (Breguet’s student cottage, Palais Royal), along with a pendant that bears French control marks for 1822-1838. The case back and cuvette are additionally numbered, with the inside of the cuvette stamped B M in a lozenge shaped cartouche.

The movement operates effectively; the minute hand adjusts smoothly while the hour markers leap clearly on the hour. The dial’s engine turning is in good condition, although there are some scuff marks near the centre and minor indentations on the subsidiary seconds dial. Tarnishing is evident as well, particularly around the edge of the dial. The hands display some oxidation spots. The case’s engine turning shows wear on the exposed edges, with a few scratches on the back cover and a slight depression near the pendant edge. The covers close securely.
