The Lip company was founded in Besançon in the 1860s by Emmanuel Lipmann. In France, it was plagued by strikes and factory occupations in the 1970s and 1980s, which at times even led to collective self-management of the company. The daily newspaper Libération described the events as the social conflict of the 1970s.
