Gold striking and repeating clock watch
–
A fine and very rare French Louis XV, 18 carat gold half hour striking and repeating clock watch, with Paris hallmarks for 1760. The movement features a gilt full plate with turned pillars, a fusee with a chain, and a verge escapement. It includes a three-arm steel balance and a flat balance spring, along with a foliate pierced and chased continental balance cock. The regulation dial is silvered. The striking train is equipped with a fixed spring barrel, allowing it to chime the hours and half-hours with a single hammer on a bell. It also has a repeating function for the last hour, activated by depressing the pendant. The case is pierced and engine-turned, displaying a swirling basket-work pattern. The white enamel dial features radial Roman numerals, an outer minute track, Arabic numerals for five-minute intervals, and gold Louis XV hands. Both the dial and the movement are signed.

The movement is in working condition; however, the quarter repeating mechanism is not functioning correctly and will need servicing. The dial has a chip at the IIII / 15 mark. The case has some scuffs but is overall in very nice condition with no dents.

The Braillard family of watchmakers is recorded as working in Besançon during the 18th Century. A clock is recorded with the signatureBraillard a Versailles, and it is possible that the pieces signed in this way were special orders for a member of Louis XV’s court at Versailles. Very few clock watches were produced in France during the 18th Century.
