Gold and enamel full hunter in Cartier style

An elegant and thin French 14 carat gold and enamel hunting cased lever pocket watch in Cartier’s montre couteau style, probably made for the Indian prince Thakor Saheb Shri Dolatsinhji Bahadur of Limbdi, circa 1910. The plain case with a so called knife edge, the front with an oval enamel portrait of the prince and the enamelled prince’s coat of arms on the back. White enamel dial with Roman hours, outer minute divisions, the center engine turned, subsidiary seconds and blued steel hands. Comes with an original picture of the prince, taken in 1909. An unsigned nickel plated lever movement.

Couteau is a term used by Cartier to describe the type of ultra thin watches with knife edged cases, open faced or hunting cased models. These watches, with thicknesses of less than 4 mm for the open faced and less than 5 mm for the hunting cased version, are among the thinnest mechanical watches ever produced.
