Gold and enamel repeating keyless lever

A very fine and rare French 18K yellow gold and enamel minute repeating keyless lever pocket watch, circa 1890. Retailed by Auger, Joaillier Bijoutier, Place des Victoires, Paris. A massive, polished case, the back cover decorated with a painted enamel coat of arms on a light blue background. Hinged gold cuvette, numbered and signed by the retailer No. 38383, Auger Joaillier Bijoutier, Place des Victoires, Paris, back cover and cuvette additionally numbered 33353.

White enamel dial with radial Roman hours, outer minute track and Arabic five-minute numerals, subsidiary seconds, gold spade hands. A rhodium-plated movement, Geneva striping decoration, 23 jewels, counterpoised straight-line lever escapement, cut bimetallic compensation balance, Breguet balance spring, index regulator, repeating on gongs activated by a slide on the band. Signed on the front plate beneath the dial, signed by the retailer on the cuvette.

The movement runs smoothly, and the repetitive sound is clear and synchronized with the handset. The hand setting operates seamlessly. There is a small faint scratch at the edge of the dial between 10 and 11 o’clock, along with a minor chip at the center of the dial, just to the right of the base of the hands. The enamel case has small surface scratches throughout and shows signs of previous polishing.
