An exquisite French Lepine with jumping centre seconds Seconde Morte, made by Royal chronometer maker Paul Garnier, Horloger de la Marine, circa 1850. Engine turned 18 carat gold à goutte case with monogram AD on back, lateral slider for independent stoppable seconds and dome signed and numbered. Bar movement with lever escapement, 2 barrels for wheel train and independent centre seconds. White enamel dial, Roman numerals, centre second hand and gold spade hands.

Paul Garnier is considered a major watchmaker and owner of various patents, i.a., for escapement systems and other watch devices. His professional career takes him from his birthplace to Luxeuil and then to Paris, where he completes his training as a watchmaker in the workshop of Jean Antoine Lepine and later Antide Janvier. Janvier gave him the right to have the title of Eleve d’Antide Janvier (pupil of Antide Janvier). He signed his watches with Paul Garnier, Horloger & Mécanicien à Paris, Horloger Mécanicien de la Marine and Horloger du Roi.
