A fine and rare French metal single-handed oval pendant watch, circa 1600. This watch features an oval-shaped movement with a verge escapement. The dial is adorned with an integral chapter ring with Roman hour numerals and half-hour divisions. The centre is beautifully engraved and features a steel hand. The metal case is decorated with engravings of foliage, flowers, and angels, and the inner lid is engraved with a sundial.
It was crafted by the skilled French watchmaker Jehan Bénard, active as early as 1611. The movement bears his signature, J. Benard à Paris and the sundial is inscribed with the name Chauvin. The interior of the lid is adorned with a beautiful monogram featuring the initials DAS surrounded by four closed Ss.
