Gold pendant watch with alliance coats-of-arms by Bernard Poitevin

An excellent petite French lady’s pendant watch with alliance coats-of-arms and matching chatelaine, circa 1870.
Bridge movement with gold screw compensation balance, lever escapement. Enamel dial with radial Arabic numerals, outer minutes track with red five minutes numerals, and gold Louis XV hands. 18-carat rose gold case, decorated back lid and chatelaine with a combined coat of arms with blue, white and yellow enamelling beneath a crown; the motto is Rex Patriae (God, King, Fatherland). The crest is the marital coat of arms of Albéric Dineaux des Arcis (1828-1901) and Marie Madeleine Philippine Dite Athénais de Villelume (1830-1897), who married in 1853.

Bernard Poitevin was a Paris watch and chronometer maker, active from 1850 to 1890. He founded the company B. Poitevin & V. Lejeune. His shop was at rue Richelieu (1850) and at 22 rue Vivienne (1860-1900). Poitevin supplied quality watches with complications, such as watches with striking mechanisms, chronographs, and chronometers 1st class with Geneva bulletinObservatory. In Bordeaux, there was a shop at Quai des Chartons 4 for a few years. The Geneva shop was more important. This was first at 17 rue du Mont-Blanc (1861) and 21 rue du Mont-Blanc in 1870. From 1880 Rizzoli Deschamps succeeded Bernard Poitevin. From 1900 to 1935, L. Gironde took over the company. He continued to run the company as Poitevin, Gironde Succeseurs. In Geneva, the shop was at 14 Boulevard James-Fazy. The Paris firm remained at rue Vivienne. Poitevin also supplied watches to Louis Raby, e.g. No. 6890. with a striking mechanism. He was married to Josephine Louise Vannier on October 5, 1851, and then resided at 27 rue Saint-Marc-Feydeau.
