An extremely rare one-handed French crucifix pendant watch with richly ornamented original key, circa 1620.
Silver case, cross shaped, all over finely engraved with foliate scrolls; front with figure of the devil, angels, flower scrolls and two hares, central oval medallion showing the birth of Jesus Christ surrounded by animals such as a rooster, symbolizing vigilance and loyalty as well as repentance (the denial of Jesus by Peter). Back with engraved angels, flower scrolls and a fox, central oval medallion showing the face of Jesus Christ wearing the crown of thorns.
Silver dial, gold chapter ring with radial Roman numerals, central engraving showing the Annunciation of Mary; arms of the cross with very finely engraved flower scrolls and animals, vertical arm with fine engraving of a pair of angels, and a dove as the symbol of the holy spirit. Blued steel single hand.
Cruciform brass firegilt full plate movement with verge escapement, applied floral decorations, gut/fusee, applied blued iron click work, iron balance without balance spring and florally engraved and pierced balance cock with cherub face.
