The watch is a masterpiece of French watchmaking from the first half of the 19th century. B-L Petit worked self-employed on rue St. Honoré no. 340 in ca. 1810-1840 and, considering the present watch, may have been one of the best French precision watchmakers of its time. He was the son-in-law and successor (and with certainty the student) of another famous Parisian watchmaker, Claude Mathieu le Ainé, who made his masterpiece in 1754 and opened a workshop in the Rue des Capucines on Place Vendome in 1757.
