A French vermeil and silver keywind hunting cased verge pocket watch with key, circa 1819. A gift from Emperor Napoleon I to Count Montholon. This pocket watch features a cock mechanism with verge movement and an enamelled dial with Arabic numerals (accident, missing hands), and polychrome enamel painted images. The vermeil and silver case is engraved on the top with a hussar in the undergrowth, surrounded by foliage and scrolls, and the back showcases an oval cartouche decorated with flowers and foliage. Later, the inner plate around the cock is engraved with from Mugnier Hger of the Emperor and King and Napoleon to Count Montholon Saint Helena August 15, 181?

Montholon (Charles Tristan) was appointed general and chamberlain of the palace in June 1815 by Napoleon and accompanied the Emperor to Saint Helena. He published Memoirs (1822-1825) and Accounts of Napoleon’s Captivity (1847). Mugnier was the watchmaker to the Emperor.
