Gold open faced key winding watch
–
A fine French 18 carat yellow and pink gold open faced pocket watch made by Gilbert in Paris, circa 1780. It has a mechanical key winding spindle and chain verge fusee movement with a balance wheel escapement and a beautifully pierced and engraved balance cock, signed Gilbert Paris. The white enamel dial shows black Arabic numerals for the hours, an outer minute track, and ornate gold Louis XV style hands. The timepiece is housed in a round 18 carat gold open faced case with a bezel decorated with a finely chased leaf border. The back cover is exquisitely engraved in pink gold with detailed floral garlands and motifs set against a geometric trellis background. It has a winding aperture on the dial face and a sturdy round suspension bow.
