Pocket watch with a monogram
–
A highly interesting and unusual anker chronometer, attributed to Adolf Schneider in Glashütte, Germany, circa 1873. This watch features a numbered full hunter case crafted from 18 carat gold with a numbered and magnificently decorated cuvette that bears an inscription of the movement quality which translates to “anker, 20 jewels and chronometer balance wheel”, a monogram on the spring lid and an engine turned back. The early enamel dial features an outer minute and hour track with Roman hour numerals, a subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock and very fine steel hands. The numbered movement is fitted with an anker chronometer escapement in top quality 1A and a diamond end stone.
The case and movement bear matching numbers and the movement is signed.

Schneider
Friedrich August Adolf Schneider (1824–1878) was one of the four founding fathers of the Glashütte watch industry, alongside Ferdinand Adolph Lange , Moritz Grossmann and Julius Assmann. He was Lange’s brother-in-law and a foreman, co founded the first watch factory in Glashütte with Lange on December 7, 1845. After several years of helping establish the initial industry and training the first apprentices, Schneider founded his own factory in 1855. He was instrumental in developing the “Glashütte precision pocket watch” style, completing a famous joint design with Assmann and Grossmann in 1867.

His son, Woldemar Schneider, continued the business around 1880. The company eventually ceased operations and like many original Glashütte firms, its history was later absorbed into the state owned VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe (GUB) after World War II.
