A rock crystal and gilded brass watch by David Buschman
–
A German important astronomical verge pocket watch with a full calendar and moon phase, probably after 1657. This watch has a gilded brass, steel, and partly blued full plate movement with intricately designed blued pierced click work, a gut/fusee, verge escapement, and a balance cock which is beautifully florally engraved and pierced. The gilt-brass, silver, and partly gilt dial is finely engraved, featuring a date ring with Arabic numerals for the month, an aperture chapter ring with Arabic numerals for the moon age, and an aperture for the moon phase. Additionally, there is a date ring with the names of the week and a time ring with Roman radial hours and half-hour markers, all with iron hands. The outer edge features a ring with the month’s names with an indication of the number of days. This timepiece is encased in rock crystal and gilded brass. The movement’s back plate bears the signature: Davidt Buschman / Aug.

Buschmann belonged to a prominent family of clockmakers active in Augsburg in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. His uncle, Johann I Buschmann, learned the secret of Jost Bürgi’s cross-beat escapement, and for a brief period, watches with the escapement were made in Augsburg. This watch has an ordinary verge escapement, but it tells the hour of the day, the day of the week, the day of the month, the phases of the moon, and the moon’s age in its monthly cycle.
David Buschmann was born on July 11, 1626. He died on April 6, 1701.
