A one handed “clock watch“ with hour self strike and alarm of museum quality, circa 1590.
Brass case, firegilt, allover rich open work floral chasing and engraving, front with spoke shaped open work detail showing the hours. Back decorated with mascarons and gures, leaf scrolls and animal motifs around the edge: monkeys, dogs, a hare and a horse. Dial is fire gilt, applied hour knobs for time reading by night, outer chapter ring with Roman numerals “I-XII”, inner chapter ring with Arabic hours “13-24”, centred engraved compass rose, finely cut iron hand. Full plate movement, fire gilt, signed, florally engraved, verge escapement, three open springs, turned movement pillars, locking plate with internal teeth, foliot and hog’s bristle without balance spring.
