Gilt Renaissance watch

An early and excellently preserved Renaissance pendant watch made by Conrad Kreißerer in Germany, circa 1600. The gilt metal case of this watch is elaborately ornamented, has a cross shape and is hinged on both sides, the front lid is pierced to allow the time to be read even when closed. The face has a smooth dial with black Roman hour numerals on a metal chapter ring and decorative gilt hands. The cross shaped movement has a verge escapement, no hairspring and is stack freed.
The movement is signed.

This watch comes from one of the most important German collections.

According to Abeler, watchmakers named Conrad Kreizer were mentioned both in Augsburg as well as in Strasbourg. Numerous variations of the surname are registered, with at least seven variants. They were active around 1600 and various pendant watches, especially cross shaped ones, were made in both places.
