A very fine and rare, 18K gold painted-on enamel hunting cased pocket watch with the enamel portrait of the Shah of Persia, Naser AL Din Shah Qajar, circa 1890.
Calibre 20′ movement. Silvered engraved dial with black Roman numerals and five-minute divisions, blued steel hands, applied gilt foliate centre and outer border, and subsidiary seconds at 6. 18K gold case, the front with an enamel portrait of the Shah of Persia, Naser AL Din Shah Qajar, and the back cover decorated with a Qajar coat-of-arms with a lion holding a sabre behind which rises the Sun with a human face.

The portrait on the present watch is that of Naser al-Din, Shah of Persia. During his reign from 1846-1898, he became the first leader of his country to visit Europe. On the second of his three tours of Europe in 1873, he recorded his travels in a diary, later translated into several languages. Queen Victoria appointed him a Knight of the Order of the Garter during that trip. This watch features his portrait in finely painted polychrome enamel to the front and the Persian Lion and Sun crest to the reverse. This piece was likely commissioned as a gift to his hosts during travels.
