Gold hunting cased repeating pocket watch by A. Lange & Söhne
–
A German gold hunting cased quarter repeating keyless lever watch, made by A. Lange & Söhne, Deutsche Uhrenfabrikation, Glashütte, circa 1913. The watch features a second quality, gilded ¾ plate movement with a gold lever and escape wheel, a bimetallic compensation balance, 22 jewels, swanneck regulation, and a ruby endstone. The movement has two hammers that repeat on a coiled gong and is signed and numbered Deutsche Uhrenfabrikation, Glashütte, with the number 70704. The white enamel dial has Arabic numerals and a black outer minute ring. It has gold filigree hands and a sunken subsidiary seconds dial. The dial is also signed Deutsche Uhrenfabrikation, Glashütte I/SA, A. Lange & Söhne.
–
The 14 carat gold Royal case features polished covers, a handset lever beneath the bezel at the 4 o’clock position and a plain polished gold cuvette. The front and back covers are signed and numbered by A. Lange & Söhne, Glashütte B/Dresden, with the number 70704. The watch is accompanied by a certificate of origin from the Deutsches Uhrenmuseum, Glashütte, which confirms the date of sale as December 15, 1913, to Comp. M Silberthau in Nuremberg for a price of 784 M. It is designed in the Royal style.

A. Lange & Söhne developed DUF (Deutsche Uhrenfabrikation) watches in collaboration with the Dresden company Dürrstein & Co. The aim was to create a more accessible yet still precise timepiece for consumers. This particular piece is representative of DUF watches, featuring the signature on the dial as well as a 14 carat gold case.
–
DUF watches mainly differed from ALS branded watches in that their jewels did not have screwed bushings made of gold; instead, they were adjusted to three positions rather than five. Additionally, their movements were somewhat simpler and included a ruby endstone instead of the typical diamond.
–
The movement is running but repeats with two hammers and doesn’t always chime the quarters, requiring adjustment. The dial has a few minor scratches but is generally in good condition. The case covers have been polished previously. The bow is a different shade of gold compared to the pendant, suggesting it may have been replaced. The inside of the cuvette has a deep scratch, and the cuvette itself does not close securely.
