An extremely rare and very fine 18 carat rose gold hunting cased minute repeating quality 1A Glashütte lever pocket watch, circa 1890. Glazed 4/5 plate movement, two hammers, two gongs, a piston tooth lever escapement and gold screw compensation balance. White enamel dial with black Arabic hours, an outer minute track, red Arabic five minute numerals, sunk subsidiary seconds at 6 o’clock and gold Louis XIV hands. A plain case. Dial signed, case and movement signed and numbered.

As early as 1890, this hunting cased timepiece with a minute repeater cost 1,075 marks. The 19-line, grainy gold plated movement with 4/5 plate is equipped in a 1A version with a Glashütte escapement, screwed gold chatons and a diamond capstone on the balance wheel. The movement is housed in a gold case of the Lucia type with a fineness of 750/1000.

Julius Assmann was born in 1827 and died in 1886 at the age of 58. He was a passionate watchmaker in Glashütte, Germany. Assmann at one time was employed by his father-in-law, Ferdinand Adolph Lange, the man who laid the cornerstone of the German watchmaking industry in the 1840s. He founded his own company in 1852, the Julius Assmann Deutsche Präzisions-Taschenuhren-Fabrik (German Precision Pocket Watch Factory) producing key wound pocket watches. Assmann was soon awarded the gold medal by the German Trade Industry. Within two years, his watches progressed to crown winding and the three-quarter plates so characteristic of Glashütte. When he died his company was divided among the Assmann family.
