A rare, German pair-cased verge clock watch with day and night indicator, circa 1690.
Two cases: outer case, brass and silver, with tortoiseshell, applied stud decoration, and large lateral hinge; inner case, silver and polished. Silver, Champlevé dial with retrograde Roman hours for diurnal and nocturnal hours, aperture for day and night indication by moon phase with engraved moon and stars or sun disc on a blued steel disc – the bottom half of the dial with punched foliage and mythological birds -. gilt and pierced minute hand and blued steel hand. Full plate movement, keywind, fire gilt and signed, with applied floral ornaments, chain/fusee, tulip pillars, three-arm steel balance, florally engraved and pierced balance cock with foliate decor.

Christoph Schöner
Christoph Schöner or Schönner was born before 1660 in Vienna but later settled in Augsburg. In 1681 he married the widow of watchmaker Rochus Stressler and ran his own business from 1681 on. Schöner was a very prolific maker and many of his works are now owned by national and international museums and private collections. Schöner died in 1709.
