The company was originally founded by Alexander Dobbie in 1841. With remarkable work skills and as a man with an impeccable character, he became an agent in Scotland for Barraud from London in 1850, the world famous chronometer manufacturer. In the workshops worked highly efficient craftsmen. In addition to Barrauds agency, the gentlemen Dobbie & Son were also honourable chronometer manufacturers for the Admiralty. The explosion that took place in the Tradeston Grain Mills in 1870 completely destroyed the company’s workshops. The venerable founder of the company died on 18 February 1887. He was widely known and highly regarded in maritime circles. He was succeeded by his son John C. Dobbie who continued to run the workshops.
