Gustav Hermann Smy was born in Dresden in 1867 and completed his apprenticeship with the court watchmaker Ludwig Teubner. He worked in Berlin and Hamburg before accepting a position with Robert Stangenberg in Montevideo (Uruguay) in 1888. In the following five years of his work in South America, he worked out the necessary finances for establishing his own business and then returned to Germany. On October 1st of the same year, he founded his own company, a specialist shop for clocks and goldware in Dresden at Moritzstrasse 10, corner of König Joh. Strasse. Among other things, Smy represented the Deutsche Anker watch factory J. Assmann in Glashütte. The company also sold watches by A. Lange & Söhne and B. Junge & Söhne, also from Glashütte.
