Silver attractive verge in triple cases
–
An attractive, large verge pocket watch with three cases and enamel painting made by William Collett in Uxbridge, England, circa 1778. All three cases of this watch are crafted from silver, the protective outer case is covered with tortoiseshell, the second case is plain and has London hallmarks for 1778 as does the inner case. The face has a very fine polychrome enamel so called farmer’s painting and a small white enamel dial in the center with Roman hour numerals, outer minute dots with Arabic quarter hours and decorative blued hands. The numbered movement has a magnificent English verge escapement with extremely elaborate decoration and worm gear.
Movement signed.

The Colletts
William and Catherine Collett were a family of watchmakers based in Uxbridge, a market town and staging post to the west of London at the time. In December 1794, their premises were burgled. William died before the Old Bailey trial in January 1795 when the perpetrator, Michael Love, was found guilty and sentenced to death. The transcript of the trial can be found online. The will of William Collett accompanies the watch and can be viewed at the National Archives in Kew.
