An English three colour gold and paste set open faced pocket watch with unusual Massey lever escapement, circa 1830. Gilt Massey type 1 lever escapement, free standing barrel, diamond endstone, bridge with screwed chatons. Three color gold chased and engraved dial, applied Arabic numerals, gold hands. Three color gold chased case with scroll decoration, case and bezel set with large paste stones, milled band. Movement signed ‘Liverpool Robt. Roskell 27175’.

Edward Massey (1772 – 1852) was a Coventry maker who patented a detached lever escapement in 1815. This was the first introduction of a simple inexpensively made lever escapement in England. This present example is very unusual in that the movement has a very open construction, making the escapement clearly visible.
