–
A. Brédillard was a pocket watchmaker and horologist. The company was highly regarded during the late 19th and early 20th centuries for manufacturing and assembling high quality timepieces.
The item presented here was entirely manufactured and assembled by Brédillard. While the watch was sold out of a Tiffany & Co boutique, the physical assembly process follows a strict division of labour typical of early 20th century horology:
– The Entire Build:
– The Movement:
They built, assembled and calibrated the gears, escapement and balance wheels of
the inner mechanical movement.
– The “Habillage”:
They cast the precious metal casing and applied the complex orange- and blue
guilloché enameling, setting the diamonds and emeralds into the frame.
Tiffany & Co:
– The Commission:
Tiffany & Co acted as the importing luxury retailer. They ordered the finished,
assembled masterpiece directly from Brédillard’s prestigious European studio to sell to
their elite American clientèle.
– The Signature:
Once the completed watch arrived at Tiffany & Co, they merely printed or painted their
own brand name (“Tiffany & Co”) onto the dial. This served as a “private label” stamp
of retail approval, assuring buyers of its elite origin
